The Firefighter Guide
About
The Firefighter Guide exists for candidates who feel called to the fire service and are willing to work for the opportunity, but do not want to spend years guessing at how hiring works.
Why the guide exists
Advice about becoming a firefighter is easy to find and hard to assemble. One source explains the physical test. Another offers interview tips. Someone at a station shares what worked years ago. Candidates are left to piece together a process that is long, formal, and different from ordinary hiring, often while they are already being evaluated by it.
The Firefighter Hiring Guide: From Applicant to Job-Offer Ready brings that process together in one place. It follows a candidate from deciding whether the career is right for them through qualifications, applications, written and physical testing, oral boards, the background investigation, psychological and medical evaluations, the job offer, the academy, and the first months as a rookie. It explains what happens at each stage, what departments are evaluating, and where candidates commonly lose ground.
It does not promise that anyone will be hired. Departments differ, competition is real, and the candidate still has to do the work. The purpose of the guide is to give that work direction.
About Henry Barrett
Henry Barrett is a former firefighter-paramedic and fire-service leader with experience in hiring, training, labor leadership, and department operations. His career included service as an engineer, and he has sat on firefighter hiring panels.
His own path into the fire service was not a straight line. He attended a fire academy before he was hired, and early on he failed written tests, interviews, and practicals while working hard in the wrong direction. When he began treating hiring as a process, looking at what each stage was actually measuring and where his preparation kept falling short, his results changed: he placed first on a written test, ranked first on an oral board, was the fire chief’s first selection, and graduated from the academy as Top Gun.
The Firefighter Hiring Guide comes from that experience, and from seeing the hiring process from both sides of the table.
